The new Volkswagen Golf, which is expected to be available in Ireland in December, has been totally redesigned

A December date has been announced for the arrival of the new Volkswagen Golf.

Completely redesigned, much to the benefit of the taller driver, the Golf promises to be safer, bigger and more comfortable.

The front seats have been set 20mm further back than in the current model and rear passengers have 15mm more rear legroom.

Front shoulder room has been improved by 31mm, with a 30mm improvement in the rear and elbow room has been improved by 22mm in the front and 20mm at the rear.

The boot is also 30 litres bigger than the outgoing model.

A new generation of engines has been developed for the new Golf, with a power range from 85bhp to 150bhp. All engines will carry the fuel efficient Stop/Start technology.

The Golf is currently Ireland’s best selling VW model and Volkswagen expects the 1.6litre 105bph diesel engine to be the most popular of the new models in Ireland. This, VW says, consumes just 3.8litres of fuel per 100km, with 99g/km of CO2.

The car manufacturer claims the new Golf 140 bhp petrol engine, which has a combined fuel consumption of 4.8l/100km, is nearly a quarter more efficient than the outgoing model.

Pricing and specification will be announced closer to the launch date.
