The Euro NCAP carries out a variety of tests on new car models

Car safety ratings agency Euro NCAP has awarded the top five star rating to 14 cars in its latest round of results.

The Fiat 500L, Ford Fiesta and Kuga; Hyundai Santa Fe; Mercedes-Benz A-Class; Mitsubishi Outlander and the Opel Mokka all achieved five star ratings.

The Seat Leon and Toledo, as well as the Skoda Rapid, Subaru Forester, the new Range Rover, Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid and the new Volkswagen Golf were also awarded top marks.

However, Romanian car firm Dacia, which has just arrived in Ireland, has been lambasted after the Dacia Lodgy recorded a three star result, performing ‘below average’ in all areas of safety.

Secretary General of Euro NCAP, Dr Michiel van Ratingen said: ‘It is disappointing to see the Lodgy do badly in our tests… The Lodgy is a budget vehicle and customers will accept compromises in comfort and performance, but not safety.

‘Euro NCAP believes that occupants’ safety should be paramount, regardless of how much they pay for their vehicle.’

The Lodgy is not available in Ireland.
