The all new Ford Mondeo, which is due in Ireland next month, will have a host of new safety technology options, including inflatable seatbelts and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection.

The seat belt technology is making its European debut on the Mondeo.

In the event of an accident, the belt rapidly inflates to ‘disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional seatbelt’.

Meanwhile, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection is an advance on Ford’s Active City Stop. It can detect people ahead in the vicinity of the car who may cross into its path.

The system works via a camera mounted on the windscreen and radar on the bumper and can distinguish between pedestrians and inanimate objects.

If it detects a potential collision, it gives the driver an audible and visual warning. If the driver does not respond, it automatically applies the brakes.

Active City Stop, meanwhile, operates at speeds of up to 40 kph and automatically applies the brakes if it detects an imminent collision with a vehicle ahead.

The all new Ford Mondeo is expected in dealerships next month, with prices starting from €28,995.
