The new Opel Karl is expected in Ireland next summer

First there was Adam, now there’s Karl. Opel is making it easier for indecisive or lazy city car drivers around Europe to name their car with pre-named models.

The German car manufacturer describes the new compact as ‘small, exquisite and simply outstanding’.

Available from next summer, the 5-door Karl can comfortably accommodate five people, Opel says.

Named after the son of the company’s founder, Opel’s new entry level model boasts a new 1.0-litre Ecotech 75hp, three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed transmission.

Opel says Karl will be equipped with safety, comfort and infotainment technologies ‘unrivalled in this segment’. These include hill start assist, cruise control and speed limiter, Park Assist, Lane Departure Warning, fog lights, cornering lights and heated leather steering wheel.

Opel’s IntelliLink infotainment system will also be available, this integrates Apple and Android smartphones into the car, allowing for music streaming and SatNav systems to be run through the infotainment system.

Opel Group CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann said: ‘Opel’s new entry-level model is a grown-up car and will appeal to heart and intellect.

‘The Opel Karl is the ideal car for price-conscious customers looking to combine everyday suitability with comfort and modern technologies.’

Prices and specification will be announced closer to launch.
