Peugeot will unveil its most powerful production model ever at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 1.6-litre 270bhp Peugeot RCZ R was developed in association with Peugeot Sport and the French car manufacturer says it can accelerate from 0-100kph in less than six seconds.

It sits lower to the ground and is lighter than the Peugeot RCZ sports coupe and also has wider wheels. Further differentiation is seen in the matt black roof arches, its R badge signature and door sills.

The Peugeot RCZ R also carries the small steering wheel which was debuted last year in the Peugeot 208.

The leather interior features Peugeot Sport devised seats, a short gear lever and aluminium gear knob.

Peugeot says the new performance model was developed for use primarily on a circuit but it is ‘docile and responsive enough for everyday use’.

It puts fuel consumption at 6.3l/100km, with CO2 emissions of 145g/km.

Peugeot Product Director, Xavier Peugeot said: ‘All the strength of style of the RCZ is enhanced by the very dynamic performance and the 270bhp of this R version which will delight the enthusiasts of sports cars.’

The Peugeot RCZ R will go on sale across Europe at the start of 2014, with Irish buyers able to order from December 2013.

Irish prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
