SIMI President Gerry Caffrey launches the SIMI Autosure Professional Register scheme with Noel Brett of the RSA and SIMI press officer, Suzanne Sheridan.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry has launched a new scheme to professionalise car servicing in Ireland.

Similar to the RECI scheme for electrical contractors, only qualified technicians will be allowed to sign off on service work carried out under the SIMI Autosure Professional Register (SIMI APR).

Parts that need to be replaced will be kept to show why they need replacing, and the work will only be carried out if ok’d by the customer.

Only original parts, or those of matching quality, will be used.

When the work has been signed off, a SIMI APR sticker with the current year will be placed on the window of the car, to show that it was serviced to the highest possible standard.

President of SIMI, Gerry Caffrey said that in the long run, proper regular servicing will save you money.

He added: ‘There has been a big increase in untrained and illegal operators at the fringes of our Industry offering to service cars.

‘While it may seem like a bargain at the time, often the work carried out by such operators is to a poor standard, which could leave a car in dangerous condition and the owner out of pocket when something goes wrong with their car.’

CEO of the Road Safety Authority, Noel Brett said: ‘We urge people to get their car serviced to the high standard set out in this initiative, which will ensure that if any problems are developing in your car, they can be detected and fixed before they become a serious problem.’
