• Volvo V40 sets new safety record

    The all new Volvo V40 has a large number of safety options, including Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake; the world-first Pedestrian Airbag Technology, improved City Safety and Lane Keeping Aid.

    It’s been a record breaking week for Volvo, with its new Volvo V40 achieving the best overall result ever in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

    The V40 was awarded the maximum five star rating by the independent crash test authority.

    The Vovo V40 also received the best result ever in the protection for adults category, achieving 98 per cent and the V40 is the first model to achieve full marks in the pedestrian protection category.

    Senior Technical Advisor Safety at Volvo Car Corporation, Thomas Broberg said: ‘A fantastic result. We are very proud to have one of the world’s safest cars and we’re taking yet another important step toward our 2020 target – that nobody should die or be seriously injured in a Volvo.’

    Meanwhile, Ford was also celebrating with a five star rating for its new B-Max, which reaches Ireland next month.

    The compact multi-activity vehicle scored 83 per cent for overall protection, with a 92 per cent result for adult protection and 84 per cent for child protection.

    Safety project manager, Ford of Europe, Tom Overington said: ‘Safety is a fundamental Ford value and we are delighted to achieve the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP.

    ‘The team has worked very hard on making sure B-MAX meets the safety standards our customers expect from every Ford vehicle.’

    And the all new Kia cee’d has also been awarded five stars by the safety test body.

    The Kia cee’d also achieved the highest safety rating.

    The five-door hatchback was awarded the highest possible score in the Child Occupant Safety test, with an 89 per cent score in the Adult Occupation Protection category, 88 per cent for child occupant protection and 86 per cent for Safety Assist equipment.

    Vice President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe, Benny Oeyen said: ‘From the outset of the new model’s development, Kia’s engineers were dedicated to creating a car that delivers sophistication and refinement as well as the very best safety technology to protect drivers, their families and pedestrians in the event of an accident.’

    The new Renault Clio also achieved the Euro NCAP five stars, with an overall score of 85 per cent. It got top ratings for child protection and safety equipment.

    And the new Audi A3 also achieved top marks from the crash test body, with adult protection receiving its top mark.

    The Euro NCAP safety rating has been in operation since 2009. To determine a car’s safety, separate tests are carried out in four categories, which are then ranked to produce an overall grade.

    The segments are adults occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.
