One of the highlights of the interior is the practically button-free infotainment unit

A crystal glass gear lever and diamond cut volume controls are just two of the opulent features in the new Volvo XC90

Releasing interior images, Volvo described it as ‘the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo’.

It says that the designers have taken their inspiration from Sweden ‘which has a global reputation for integrating the latest technology with design that is clean, beautiful and crafted from the finest materials’.

Volvo Senior Vice President of Design, Thomas Ingenlath cited the ‘virtually button free’ touch screen infotainment unit as his highlight.

He said: ‘The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system.’

Volvo says that feature ‘represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services’, as well as helping to create ‘an interior that is modern, spacious and uncluttered’.

The third row of seats comfortably fits a passenger of up to 5ft 7in in height

The cabin of soft leather and wood also offers a gear lever made of crystal glass and diamond cut start/stop and volume controls.

Volvo’s Robin Page says that these ‘jewel’ features ‘add a bit of exclusive playfulness rather than pure functionality’.

Meanwhile, the Swedish company believes its space-saving but comfortable seat design makes the XC90 ‘a genuine 7-seater’.

Mr Page added: ‘Just like classic Scandinavian chairs, our new seats prove that seats don’t need a lot of thick padding to be comfortable.

‘The full seat core has an ergonomic shape that resembles the human spine. A multitude of adjustment possibilities makes it possible for the individual user to create an ideal seating position.’

The seats in the middle row are individual, recline and slide. An optional integrated child booster cushion is available for the middle seat.

Volvo says that its third row is the best in its segment, offering comfortable seating to passengers up to 5ft 7in. These seats are also easy to access, it adds.

Each seat in the second and third row can be folded individually, offering multiple cargo loading options.

Volvo’s Senior VP of R&D, Peter Mertens summed it up by saying: ‘Our new interior architecture is pure and uncluttered, while still radiating the sophisticated confidence and formality that luxury SUV customers expect.’

The Volvo XC90 is expected in Ireland next year. Prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
