Audi has announced details of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet ahead of its launch later this year.

The new sporty compact four-seater is bigger yet lighter than the outgoing model, with 60 litres more luggage space, making it easier to load.

A cloth soft top, the roof in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet can be opened or closed at the touch of a button in less than 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50kph.

Driver assistance systems available in the new model include adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, traffic sign recognition and park assist.

Infotainment includes a Bang & Olufsen sound system with MMI Navigation plus, with a seven inch monitor extending electrically from the instrument panel. Internet connection is available via Audi Connect.

Three engines will be available from launch – a 1.4 litre 140hp and a 1.8 litre 180hp turbocharged petrol, as well as a 2.0 litre 163hp TDI diesel. Other engine choices will follow, ranging from a 1.6 litre 110hp TDI to a 2.0 litre 300hp TFSI.

Audi says the engines available at launch are on average 12 per cent more fuel efficient than previous units.

Performance-wise, the car maker says the 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine can accelerate from 0-100kph in 9.1 seconds, with fuel economy of 5l/100km and CO2 emissions of 114g/km.

Audi describes handling as sporty, with an optional vehicle dynamics system allowing the driver to modify such systems as engine management and power steering.

The Audi A3 Cabriolet will be available in a choice of 16 exterior colours, with Irish prices and specifications announced closer to launch.

The new model will join the Audi A3 Sportback, Audi A3 Saloon and Audi A3 hatchback variants.
