Audi is adding S1 models to its compact A1 range.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive S1 and S1 Sportback will come with a 2.0 TFSI 231hp petrol engine.

Audi says the new Audi S1 and S1 Sportback ‘constitute the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line, adding an entry-level version to the Audi S model portfolio’.

The new models have a top speed of 250kph. The high performance four-cylinder engine propels the Audi S1 from 0-100kph in 5.8seconds, with the S1 Sportback achieving that speed in 5.9seconds.

Front and rear bumper design, side sills, the exhaust system, xenon plus headlights and LED rear lights, which carry new horizontally structured graphics, are some of the exterior features which set the S1 apart from the A1.

Four new exterior colours will be available for the Audi S1.

Audi chief technical officer Prof Dr Lars Hackenberg said: ‘The Audi S1 offers all the virtues of a sports car, great performance, direct handling and permanent quattro drive that puts the power to the road in a superior way.

‘The quattro drive has a large following of fans, which is sure to become even larger thanks to the offering in this segment.’

Irish pricing and specification for the Audi S1 and the Audi S1 Sportback will be announced later this month.
