The new Ford Focus ST is making its world debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK today.

Ford says the sporty and aggressive new hatchback and wagon models offer a more responsive, refined and balanced driving experience via new chassis control technologies, retuned suspension and steering.

The exterior of the new Ford Focus ST boasts a unique lamp, grille and bumper designs; muscular body kit, and new 19-inch alloy wheels

Inside, the cockpit has been redesigned, offering a simpler, ‘more intuitive layout’, with ‘significantly fewer buttons’. There’s also Recaro sports seats, ergonomic controls and a sports steering wheel.

The SYNC 2 connectivity system with a high resolution 8in colour touch screen unit is also available.

Advanced driving aids include Active City Stop, which prevents low speed fender benders by automatically applying the brakes if the driver fails to do so; Lane Keeping Aid and Cross Traffic Alert, which warns drivers reversing from parking spaces if other vehicles are about to cross their path.

And for the first time, the Ford Focus ST will be available with a diesel engine. Ford says this is its ‘most fuel‑efficient and lowest CO2 Ford performance car ever’.

The 2.0-litre 185PS TDCi engine has a top speed of 217kph, a 0-100kph acceleration time of 8.1seconds; combined fuel efficiency of 4.4l/100km and CO2 output of 114g/km.

Meanwhile, although not as economical as its diesel counterpart, the 2.0-litre 250PS petrol EcoBoost engine is the most fuel-efficient petrol Focus ST ever.

It’s faster, but less efficient than the diesel, with a top speed of 248kph, 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.5seconds, fuel efficiency of 6.8l/100km and CO2 output of 158g/km.

Both models have Start/Stop technology, which kills the engine when the car is idling in traffic.

Ford has always been creative when naming the body paint in the Focus ST and Stealth and Deep Impact Blue are the two new colours joining Tangerine Scream, Frozen White, Panther Black and Race Red.

The new Focus ST will be available in three trim levels – ST1, ST2 and ST3.

In the ST1 trim seats have grey/charcoal/anthracite black fabric; ST2 has partial leather seats with base and side bolsters available in Tangerine Scream; Performance Blue; Smoke Storm or Race Red; and the seats in the ST3 have a full charcoal black leather finish.

Ford of Europe’s Joe Bakaj said: ‘The new Focus ST delivers an even more sophisticated balance of performance, driving dynamics, refinement and style – the core of Ford’s Sports Technologies DNA.

‘Even more enjoyable and rewarding to drive and with the choice of diesel power for the first time, the new Focus ST is in a class of its own.’

The new Ford Focus ST is expected in Ireland early next year. Prices and Irish specifications will be announced closer to launch.
