Dents and dings in doors can cost up to €300 to fix

Ford has come up with a solution to prevent dents and scratches on car doors which result from tight parking spaces.

The protective flap of the Door Edge Protector works automatically when the door is opened, providing a buffer to prevent the damage caused by one car door banging off another.

It works against more than 90 per cent of obstructions to front doors and against 85 per cent of rear door incidents.

Ford has found that 72 per cent of car owners in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK have damage to the doors of their vehicles. The cost of repairing a dented car door can be in the region of €300.

The Ford Door Edge Protector will be available as an option in Focus models later this year

Matthew Avery of the UK Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre said: ‘Ford’s new Door Edge Protector is an excellent innovation for preventing these annoying dents and scratches.

‘Any system that can reduce the risk of damage to your own or someone else’s vehicle is worthy of recognition, but one that operates so effectively without affecting the looks or performance is particularly noteworthy.’

The feature will be available in Ford Focus models in Ireland. It will debut as an option on the new Ford Focus ST which arrives here in September and will be available in regular Focus models later in the year. The Door Edge Protector costs €80.
