The new Skoda Octavia will be available in Ireland from March 16

Skoda is literally taking on the big boys in the executive saloon market with the arrival in March of the new Skoda Octavia.

Although generally thought of as a medium sized family car, the new Skoda Octavia’s larger dimensions will allow it to compete in the higher segment, the Czech car maker believes.

The new model is longer and wider than the outgoing Octavia, resulting in a more spacious cabin, more knee room, better rear headroom and a best in class boot size of 590litres.

Three spec levels will be available in the new Skoda Octavia – Active, Ambition and Elegance – and five engine options in both manual and automatic transmission will be on offer.

Engine choices include a 1.2-litre 86bhp low emission TSI petrol engine, as well as a 1.6-litre 105bhp and 2.0-litre 150bhp TDI diesel.

The new Skoda Octavia will also include a new range of touch screen navigation and audio units.

This model has proven popular with Irish drivers over the years, with more than 40,000 Skoda Octavias sold here since it arrived in 1998.

Head of marketing at Skoda Ireland, Raymond Leddy said that specification levels have been increased for all versions of the new Skoda Octavia.

He added: ‘Additional airbags, Electronic Stability Control for increased safety and Stop Start Technology for reduced emissions and improved fuel economy are now standard features across the range. Stylish alloy wheels are now offered on all models with the exception of the entry Active model.’

He said that while the new Octavia is bigger than the outgoing model it is 100kg lighter.

He added: ‘Less weight equates to better fuel economy and the new Octavia in its 1.6 TDI version consumes only 3.8-litres for every 100km travelled.’

The new Skoda Octavia will be available from March 16, with prices starting from €18,995.
