The new Peugeot 2008 offers the drivability of a hatchback, coupled with the space of an SUV

Peugeot is the latest car manufacturer to enter the compact SUV segment, with the new Peugeot 2008 arriving in Ireland this summer.

The Peugeot 2008 aims to ‘combine the driving characteristics of a hatchback with the strengths of an SUV’.

The French car-manufacturer says it has achieved this by ‘blending the success and design of the award-winning 3008 with all the features, performance and state-of-the-art engines of the new 208‘.

Inside, Peugeot says the cabin is spacious, particularly for back seat passengers. The Peugeot 2008 features a cockpit-style instrument panel, complete with an aircraft type handbrake.

Air vents, touch screen trims, handbrake and gear lever as well as the steering wheel get a satin chrome finish, which Peugeot says gives it a premium feel.

The boot in the Peugeot 2008 at 360 litres is also spacious, with lots of cubbies and storage options. The rear seats can be folded at the touch of a button, extending the boot to 1,194 litres.

Cruise control with speed limiter is standard on the Peugeot 2008. The park assist self parking system is available as an option, this selects the space and steers into it, all the driver has to do is to work the accelerator and the brake.

An optional Grip Control system is also available, which offers the driver Snow, Off-Road, Sand or EPS Off modes when Standard mode could be boosted in low grip conditions.

Five engines will be available from launch – the 1.2 VTi 82bhp petrol; 1.4 HDi 68bhp diesel; 1.6 HDi Stop Start Ecomatique 92bhp diesel; 1.6 HDi Stop Start 92bhp diesel and the 1.6 eHDi Stop Start 115bhp diesel. A 1.2-litre e-THP Stop Start 82bhp petrol engine will be added shortly after launch. All fall between the €180 and €200 road tax bands.

Sales and marketing director of Peugeot Ireland, Des Cannon said: “Peugeot’s new 2008 is a compact, stylish vehicle that offers great passenger space. A higher driving position instills a superb feeling of safety and security.’

The Peugeot 2008 is expected in Ireland this summer. Prices and Irish specification will be announced closer to the launch date.
