Skoda’s new compact saloon, the Skoda Rapid is available from €15,995

    The Skoda Rapid has arrived.

The compact saloon, which is aimed at those looking for an affordable, spacious family car, is available with five engine options in both manual and automatic transmission.

Three specification levels are on offer.

Skoda believes the 1.6 TDI diesel will be the big seller but it is also offering motorists a number of petrol alternatives.

Head of Marketing at Skoda Ireland, Raymond Leddy said the primary reason for choosing a diesel engine is that while the car may be more expensive, savings can be made in the annual tax and fuel costs. However, he believes the Rapid’s 1.2-litre petrol offering is a viable alternative.

He said: ‘The question is how long will it take to achieve these savings? Take the Rapid 1.2 TSI, 86bhp – like the diesel it achieves Band-A emission status and consumes just 0.7l more per 100km driven.

‘Using today’s fuel prices it would take 14-years for a diesel version to justify and recoup the savings on fuel alone. This really brings petrol back into the equation.’

Skoda is describing the Rapid as ‘a roomy, elegant and affordable car for the whole family’ and says it has class leading passenger leg and headroom, as well as a boot which rivals bigger cars.

Prices for the Skoda Rapid start from €15,995 and the new model will be available to test drive at the Open Week at Skoda dealerships nationwide from October 27 to November 3.

Customers will also be able to avail of special offers for new 2013 purchases.
