The 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is now available to order – at a price €9,550 less expensive than the 2014 model.

Volkswagen Ireland says the new €42,445 starting price is ‘despite the addition of increase specification to the value of €2,280’.

Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Distance control, Climatronic two zone air conditioning and Bi-Xenon headlights, as well as 19” Cadiz alloy wheels.

The 2015 Golf R is available in both 3-door and five-door variants with a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG gearbox.

The most powerful production Volkswagen Golf, the Golf R has a 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine, putting out 300PS.

A 0-100kph acceleration time of 5.1seconds can be achieved in the manual, with an even faster 4.9 seconds in the DSG.

Sharing the same engine as the Golf GTI, the unit in the R has a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.

Design-wise, the R has large air inlets, a modified radiator grille with an R logo and daytime running lights, as well as matt chrome-capped door mirrors and bespoke body colour sills.

Operations director of Volkswagen Ireland, Paul Burke said: ‘The new price point for Golf R brings it more in line with the rest of our performance Golf range.

‘There is now just a €1,780 price walk from our most expensive GTI to the entry-level R model which is going to give performance car customers something to think about.’
